FADO - World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO

Portuguese traditional music "FADO" was recognized by the UNESCO to be World Cultural Heritage

We are proud to share with all of you that the portuguese traditional music called "FADO" was recognized this weekend

Fado has just been given World Heritage status by UNESCO, meaning it’s protected as “intangible cultural heritage of humanity,” joining other unique cultural expressions such as the tango and flamenco. This musical style (which is actually more like a poetic recital) is strongly connected to the streets of Lisbon where it was born and has come to be symbolic of the Portuguese soul. Those interested in listening to Fado should look for the greatest Fado diva of all time, Amalia Rodrigues. She defined the style of the genre and has influenced an entire generation of young singers. The album to get is “The Art of Amalia Rodrigues” which should be available wherever World Music is sold. The queen of the new generation of “fadistas” is Grammy-nominated Mariza, and her album “Fado em Mim” is a great introduction to the singer and Fado music itself.

Not Fado but greatly representative of the sound of Lisbon is Madredeus, a band that received great acclaim and worldwide success in the 1990s. Their “Best Of” collection is called “Antologia” where you’ll hear their now-classic hits mixing the influences of Fado and modern folk. A former member has gone solo to great success, with his album “Cinema” having been considered one of the albums of the year by Billboard magazine in 2004. That’s Rodrigo Leão, a musician/composer with an obvious passion for Lisbon reflected in his music.
Also mixing Lisbon’s Fado with folk and pop is Dulce Pontes, a well-known name in World Music. Her biggest hit is “Canção do Mar,” first performed by Amália Rodrigues. You’ve heard that song if you watched the movie “Primal Fear” (starring Richard Gere) or the NBC/TNT drama “Southland” (it’s the theme song). Pontes’ “Best Of” CD is one of the top-selling Portuguese albums of all time.

To understand the relevance of Fado in Lisbon and on Portuguese culture in general, visit the Fado Museum whenever you’re in the city.

1,8 million euros Investment in the Lagoon of Obidos

The portuguese Government has just approved and ordered sand dredging in the Lagoon of Obidos, located in Foz do Arelho - Silver Coast.

The project is meant to take about 6 months ending before the Summer of 2012, the sand will be used to extend the beach extension and make it possible for the connection between the Atlantic Ocean and the Lagoon to work propertly.

In total it is expected to remove 350.000 cubic metres of sand and the operations will start until the end of this month (November, 2011)

It is good to know that despite the economic crisis, the Government is concerned about the situation of the Lagoon of Obidos.

The connection between the Atlantic Ocean is crucial to the survival of the eco-system and preservation of the fish habitat.

There are large amount of families that earn their income with the fishing activities in the Lagoon which would be in risk if this investment did not happen now!

Medieval Festival in Obidos - 7th to the 24th of July

Medieval Fair in Obidos - 7th to the 24th of July

For the 10th year the town of Óbidos will travel again back in time and recreate the customs and spirit of medieval Europe.

Flowing vibrant banners and heraldic flags, wizards, jugglers,

court jesters, wandering minstrels, musicians and mimes provide the vivacious merriment.

Craft demonstrators and some 100 food, beverage and merchandise vendors take visitors to a time that has long passed.

The afternoon concludes with jousting knights on horseback.

Entertainment activities take place in all three stages of the Old Arms Square and in random areas of the fair. Visitants will also come upon two civil and military camp sites, replicas of assault weapons, surgical and domestic tools, and different animals, such as horses, ponies, donkeys, falcons and snakes.

Visitors can also enjoy a “medieval” style meal. Hearty soups, grilled meat and sausages, snails, cod, quail, rabbit, hog, lamb and squid are only some of the tasty delights offered by almost 20 taverns spread throughout the marketplace.

Whoever wishes may also exchange Euros for the local currency of the fair: the TORREÃO.

This coin was created especially for this event and is equivalent to the Euro. There is no exchange rate and you can take these coins home as souvenir.

Berlengas Island in the Silver Coast has just been classified by UNESCO as a World Natural Reserve

The Berlenga Island is about 7 miles from the Peniche Port (Portugal).

It is 1500 meters long and 800 meters wide, with a perimeter of 4000 meters and reaches 88 meters at its highest point and –30 meters at its lowest.

It is a region of great interest for botanical specialists with several endemic species and species of limited distribution.
Important nesting spot for some species of ocean birds (such as the guillemot - Airo uria aalge- , a symbol of the reserve), and a passing point for several migratory species.

It is a Maritime Natural Reserve of great wild life richness, particularly ichthyology.

Visits are possible, but restricted, by boat that can be accessed by the Port of Peniche.

The islands is a fantastic scene for observing the natural caves on a boat guided visit.

There is a restaurant that serves fantastic fish meals!

This year’s event will be the 10th annual edition! On June 18th and 19th, 2011, the teams will once again take to the Lagoon in what is set to be the best year so far! These are the “24 hours on the Lagoon”!

Organized by ESCOLA DE VELA DA LAGOA and with the sponsorships of various organizations along with our local maritime authority, the “LAGOON’S 24 HOURS” has become an unforgettable event for all those who participate.

We sail catamaran’s non-stop for 24 hours on a course of approx. 165 nautical miles (~300km).

But the excitement is not just on the Lagoon! ESCOLA DE VELA DA LAGOA animates the shoreline with workshops, activities and music.

By nightfall we enjoy a fantastic buffet barbeque dinner which reunites participants, guests and friends in a fabulously fun party!

Classic Cars Rally this weekend in Foz do Arelho, Silver Coast

Happening this weekend in Foz do Arelho

For the 3rd time there will be hapening an event with the name "Foz Ramp" where old and classic cars will be doing a rally in the ramp that goes from the beach to the north exit of Foz do Arelho.

The event starts tomorrow (Saturday, 7th of May 2011) with tecnical verifications to the cars around 5 pm and ending with dancing in the bar "Solar da Paz" in Foz do Arelho.

On Sunday, the rally with start nearby to "Cais da Praia", with training, and the cars will depart up the hill starting at 10 am. The event will go along all morning and afternoon and finish with a drink at the end of the in the bar "Solar da Paz".

In this event you will be able to see from old Mini's, Jaguars, Citroens, BMW, Triumph Spitfire and others all with more than 20-30 years old.

Theme Park Project Approved for Lisbon - Silver Coast - Portugal - Lusolandia

LUSOLANDIA — A THEME PARK CONCEPT FOR LISBON - SILVER COAST - PORTUGAL - Representing 255 million euros investment.

A theme park dedicated to the discovery period of the Portuguese in the 15th century, which will be called Lusolandia, will be developed in a property with 125 hectares and is located south of West Portugal, near to Lisbon in the councils of Alenquer and Azambuja.

The theme park was already created about 20 years ago but was suspended due to the fact that was located nearby to the former project of the Ota Airport (which was cancelled in 2009).

The project is being supervised and orientated in the USA by former technicians of Disney and Universal Studios.

In the park the visitors will be able to visit several continents, celebrating the arrival of the Portuguese to Africa, India, Macau, Japan, Brasil and the Americas.

The opening of the theme park - LUSOLANDIA - is scheduled to occur in 2014.

This part was taken from the Design company.

Conceived for a site near Lisbon, Portugal, EXLINE spearheaded the creative development and master planning of this full–scale theme park concept.

Celebrating the country’s “Golden Age of Discovery”, the park was themed for entertaining as well as educating the visitor about Portugal’s rich navigational history. Organized around a central body of water called “Oceans of the World”, the park plan was made up of six themed lands.

From Portugal Antigo, to lands highlighting the fifteenth century cultures of Africa, India, China, Japan, and the New World of Brazil, guests would enjoy a day of fun and fantasy recreated from images of centuries ago.

New Golf Course in the Silver Coast, located in Foz do Arelho - Rainha Golf & Spa

We are proud to announce that, after many years to gather all necessary land, the investors finally presented the plan for the new Golf Course set to be built in the parishes of Foz do Arelho and Serra do Bouro.

The Atlantic Road Detailed Plan, which covers an area of 275 hectares, is a document which is now in public discussion intended to allow the construction of a tourist area, which includes a 5 Start hotel, a golf course, spa, resorts and tourist apartments.

The hotel will have 120 rooms and is provided for a maximum of 1,022 housing units, between houses and apartments for a total of 3,553 tourist beds.

This is the only tourist zone under the Municipal Director Plan (PDM) for the council of Caldas da Rainha.

Aimed at a moderate to high economic segment, this project will contribute to the establishment of population and the constant presence of tourists, contributing to job creation, also benefiting the local economy.
In preparing this plan, the Plural - Urban Planning, Regional and Transport, Unipessoal Ltd., also wished that there was a strong environmental and landscape conservation in which it operates, fostering a harmonious integration. Thus, about 58% of the total area of the plan (covering 158 hectares) is allocated to the ecological structure, ie, not built.
The overall index for the proposed construction area of the plan is low (0.076) when compared with other joint national tour.

Plans to build a golf course 18 holes that have a level of "championship", written by a British designer of golf.

The field is assumed as a single circuit, taking advantage of views and being visible from outside, including the Atlantic Road.

In certain areas, the golf course allows long range views over the countryside, the Atlantic coast and Lagoa de Óbidos. There are also plans to construct a building for a golf club.

The road network inside the plan takes advantage, where possible, existing paths, we propose a network of footpaths and cycle paths. The aim is that the project may have an impact "very positive in the areas surrounding the municipality of Caldas, the demand that will generate the level of trade and catering," describes the company which carried out the plan.

This project represents a total investment of 300 million euros, which will help to generate 380 direct jobs and 750 indirect jobs.

The plan, which began to be drawn up in 2006, provides a distribution mechanism for capacity building and cost allocation that ensures equal treatment of all owners in proportion to the area from their land, regardless of their location.

After the public discussion it will have to be approved by the council of Caldas da Rainha, until the end of April 2011.

Sana Silver Coast Hotel Caldas da Rainha

SANA Hotel Group just announced that has purchased the Hotel Lisbonense in Caldas da Rainha. The new unit will be opening in the around May / June this year and will be under a 4 stars rank.

The amount of the deal was not announced, but the Hotel builder had previously required 6 millions euros for the building. The Hotel has 80 bedrooms & 8 suites, Restaurant, Bar e Coffee Shop.

It will operate under the name Sana Silver Coast - Excellence Concept Hotel. From the former Hotel Lisbonense nothings remains more than 3 of the outside walls, during many years this Hotel was a reference in the country, as King D. Carlos I used to stay here when he had SPA activities in the city of Caldas.

Despite the tradition the new owner decided to the change the name to SANA Silver Coast, based on the international success of the name Silver Coast.

The recontruction of the Hotel Lisbonense was a compensation to the city, required by the council of Caldas da Rainha, to allow the building of the Shopping Centre - VIVACI which is located just a few metres away.

New Silver Coast Resort - Falesia D'el Rey

The construction of a new Resort in the Silver Coast, will soon be started representing an investment of 300 milion euros!
The Group Beltico turn to bet in the region of Obidos, with the construction of a 'resort' five stars. Classified as a Project of Potential National Interest (PIN), the enterprise has obtained the approval of the municipality and other official bodies.

The construction of Falesia D'El Rey, the name of the luxury complex, is expected to start soon, and to be completed in 2018. The construction and development of the whole enterprise will represent, to the group headed by Stuart Swycher, an investment of 300 million euros.
The Falesia D'El Rey will be located near the Praia D'El Rey, a 'resort' five-star also owned Beltico Group with several years of operation.
According to the company, the project will be built in an area corresponding to 230 hectares of coastal areas, on the cliff top overlooking the sea near the Lagoa de Óbidos.
The resort consists of a contemporary five-star hotel with sea view, and a second 'boutique' hotel with spa, pools, tennis courts, shops, sports channels, among other support. The complex also includes a golf course 18 holes stretching along two miles of beach, a golf club. The residential component divided by 475 units, located along the golf course, which includes apartments (192), chalets (205) and detached houses (78).

The cliffs of Foz Arelho, Silver Coast gets more than 1 million euro investment

The cliffs of Foz Arelho will be reclassified.

Their project improvement and minimization of risks, amounting to 1.102 million, has already been approved and the Board of Caldas da Rainha will launch the public tender in September.

The work should be completed by June 2011, before the start of the next holiday season.

July - Obidos medieval fair

Medieval Fair in Obidos - 1st to 18th of July

During these eleven days the town of Óbidos will travel back and time and recreate the customs and spirit of medieval Europe.

Flowing vibrant banners and heraldic flags, wizards, jugglers,

court jesters, wandering minstrels, musicians and mimes provide the vivacious merriment.

Craft demonstrators and some 100 food, beverage and merchandise vendors take visitors to a time that has long passed.

The afternoon concludes with jousting knights on horseback.

Entertainment activities take place in all three stages of the Old Arms Square and in random areas of the fair. Visitants will also come upon two civil and military camp sites, replicas of assault weapons, surgical and domestic tools, and different animals, such as horses, ponies, donkeys, falcons and snakes.

Visitors can also enjoy a “medieval” style meal. Hearty soups, grilled meat and sausages, snails, cod, quail, rabbit, hog, lamb and squid are only some of the tasty delights offered by almost 20 taverns spread throughout the marketplace.

Whoever wishes may also exchange Euros for the local currency of the fair: the TORREÃO.

This coin was created especially for this event and is equivalent to the Euro. There is no exchange rate and you can take these coins home as souvenir.

The event gathered 18 kart pilots, and had the presence of a good number of family members from the competitors.

A great track and moment that had place in the KIRO - International Race Track of the Silver Coast

After the race, we all gathered in the Maria Lagoa Restaurant in Nadadouro for a deserved meal!

An unforgettable experience for a large number of people, specially in these days with the pain in the arms!

The day of the City Festivities in Caldas da Rainha, Silver Coast

Happening on the 14th of May

As usual, on the celebrations of the Day of the City in Caldas da Rainha, there is always a big music concert and fire works all for FREE, taking place in the square in front of the Town Hall.

This year the festivities big concert will count with the presence of the portuguese group DEOLINDA: http://www.deolinda.com.pt/cancaoaolado/

This will take place around 11pm, but the concert will start with a local group at 10 pm.

The fire works start at midnight.

This a local holiday, and public services will be closed on the following day, the 15th of May.

Tomorrow, Portugal celebrates the 25th of April! It is the celebration of Freedom for the Portuguese people, after living since 1933 under an authoritarian dictatorship regime that ended in 1974, with a military coup called the "Revolução dos Cravos - Carnation Revolution ".

The Portuguese lived under constant opression during all this period without access to education & freedom of speech.

With the Revolution the colonial war also ended and the independence and freedom was recognized to the Portuguese former colonies such as: Portuguese Guinea, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Angola, São Tomé e Principe & East Timor.

New service rental bike was launched in Caldas da Rainha - Silver Coast

Bike sharing arrived to the Silver Coast, with a new service launched by the council of Caldas da Rainha.

The aim is to share bikes for different points distributed in several locations.

So soon you may pick up a bike in the city use it for some hours and hand it back in the station in Foz Arelho or even Nadadouro.

The service will count until the end of May with at least 14 stations were you can pick / handle back a bike. Durng the month of May, the service in Foz will be limited to the weekend days, but starting June the organization counts on having the stations operating every days from at leat 10 am to 7 pm.

The prices for this service are really low considering the benefits:

Full morning Rental - 1 Eur.

Full day Rental - 2,50 Eur.

There are also Year and Weekly subscriptions which represent even a bigger saving.

The service was launched with 100 bikes, but the plan is to have 300 bikes active until the end of this Summer.

Portugal is one of the Bidding nations for 2018 Ryder Cup

Jorge Sampaio, former Portugal's President and Manuel Pinho, former Minister of Portugal Economy will be the faces of the Portuguese application for the organization of the 2018 Ryder Cup in golf, the third most competitive sport in the world media after the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup.
The choice of country-organizer of the event will be announced by the Ryder Cup Europe in 2011, with the candidates to submit the specifications of the application until next April.
Manuel Pinto, who as Minister of Economy issued the challenge of running the Ryder Cup in June 2009, heads the executive committee of the event, which honors committee is chaired by Jorge Sampaio, practitioner of the sport, as the former owner of the folder Economy.
In addition to Portugal, contributing to the test France, Germany, Spain, Netherlands and Sweden undertook to promote the winner for 12 years, throughout the country, professional tournaments of the European circuit, Senior and Challenge.
If Portugal wins the nomination the investments that will perform will be 12 million per year, co-funded by Ryder Cup Europe, which owns the commercial rights of the race, Turismo de Portugal and private partners in plots to be defined.
The costs of the golf course official Ryder Cup 2018, not yet chosen, will be covered solely by private developers.
The economic impact of the Ryder Cup in 2006 was 240 million, race televised in 500 million homes in 180 countries. The organization estimates that the Ryder Cup will bring Portugal 150 thousand visitors, two thousand journalists from around the world and sell 300 thousand tickets during the seven days of competition.
The organization of the 2018 Ryder Cup is presented as a catalyst to promote Portugal as a leader in the tourism industry and the world of golf, that initiative has the support of Turismo de Portugal, together with the Federation of Golf is to tap the event to bring the sport to all regions of the country.
Europe-US Confrontation
The mild climate throughout the year and the promise of discontinuity of the international tournaments of Minho to the Algarve and Islands are two of the gains of the Portuguese application for the remaining countries in the race for Ryder Cup 2018.
The next Ryder Cup takes place between 1 and 3 October at the Celtic Manor Resort in Wales and is already the tickets available to the public lover of the sport www.rydercup.com / tickets.
The Ryder Cup is a four-year rolling competition, confronting the selections from Europe and the United States since 1927, and for various reasons has become an event of great importance and impact of media and sports.
Portugal, where three tournaments are on The 2009 European Tour International Schedule including the Portugal Masters at Oceânico Victoria Golf Course in Vilamoura from October 15-18, will have hosted 59 European Tour, ten European Challenge Tour and ten European Senior Tour events by the end of this season. Daniel Silva is the one Portuguese player by birth to have won on The European Tour while José-Filipe Lima has taken Portuguese nationality since his win in 2004.

Panel of experts chose the 11 natural beauties

most important in each of 7 categories

Were known on last Sunday the 7th of February, the 77 pre-finalists in the election of the "7 Natural Wonders of Portugal ®. A panel of experts, representatives of several scientific and national geographic representation, chose 11 sites in each of 7 categories in the competition.

Are considered "Natural Wonders of Portugal", the natural monuments in the country containing one or more aspects of rarity or representativeness in ecological, aesthetic, scientific and cultural. Pre-finalists are organized the following 7 categories, which represent the diversity landscape of Portugal:

"Caves and Caverns," "Beaches and cliffs"; "Forests and Forests", "great relief", "no Marine Water Areas", "Protected Areas" and "marine zones."

The choice was made through the Internet, with a voting system created for this purpose and monitored byPricewaterhouseCoopers by 77 experts invited by the organization. The basic criteria for the Expert Panel were:

Beauty and uniqueness of the site named; diversity of the nominees (according to seven categories); Ecological Importance (itself or its significance for humans), historical and cultural significance; Geographic distribution within the country, state conservation site and have not undergone human intervention for cosmetic reasons.

Some of the sites were chosen in more than one category in this second phase. It is recalled that in early January 2010 were 323 applications submitted and the short list now also be submitted to a vote by a panel of 21 notable personalities of our country. A list of 21 finalists will be known on March 7, when it also opened the vote public.

This list of 21 finalists Wonders will be present at least one finalist from each of the seven regions of the country: North, Silver Coast, Lisbon and Tagus Valley, Alentejo, Algarve, Azores and Madeira. Thus, the New 7 Wonders ® ensures Portugal geographic representation.

The poll, audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers, will continue until September 7, 2010. The winners will be cleared by largest number of votes in each category and will not be elected more than two wonders of the region.

New airport serving the Silver Coast for low cost flights?

The Presidents of Tourism regions Western, Central and Leiria / Fátima will petition the government for a joint proposal to build an airport in the area of Leiria, designed especially for the tourist market and that would serve mainly low-cost airlines and charters.
This project is justified by the removal of the Lisbon airport to Alcochete, leaving the center and west of the most remote areas of travel, just when they are increasingly important to feed the tourist areas. Antonio Carneiro, president of Tourism of the West & Silver Coast, gives the example of Valladolid airport, which is a very simple structure of just a flag and an airstrip, which has been very successful because Ryan Air is used as the basis for cheap flights from there to Milan, London and Paris. The main feature of this investment would be to be very cheap, explains this charge, pointing to values between 20 to 50 million. "It has nothing to do with the airport Alcochete which will cost 3 billion, this is another championship, is something that can cost 1% of that investment. And do not detract from the importance because it will not compete with it, since it is designed to a very specific market, "he said. But to obtain more accurate data will soon be awarded a study by a consultant specialized in English. Given the argument that you can not have one airport in each city, Antonio Carneiro remember that Galicia has three airports and in the future, there will be three airports south of the Tagus (Sines, Beja and Faro), one north of the Douro (Porto) and none in the whole central region, which is precisely the region with more population. To proceed with this project there is a complete harmony "between the president of the tourism regions of Western, Central and Leria / Fatima, and the Mayor of Porto, Raul Castro said the same charge, outside the Stock Exchange Lisbon Tourism Fair (BTL) held in Lisbon last week. "If we got a base or a Ryan Air's operations in central Portugal, could boost tourism in the west coast, including the residential tourism," said he, adding that in addition to the business axis Marinha Grande - Leiria and Santuario of Fatima, is also an interesting search for a regional airport. At least, much more than expected in the Cova da Beira, where the idea continue to do in Covilhã city a regional airport. And this is the race that the Center and the West must win, convinced that that infrastructure makes much more sense on the coast. For Antonio Carneiro, the airport could be at the base area of Monte Real, there is nothing preventing this from continuing to have its military function. After all, the airport Lages in the Azores, is also an air base and the huge airport Frankfurt. Another possible location would be near Leiria in the future train station that will serve the TGV line and the West, the effect being evident advantages.

Our coment:
The future airport of Alcochete is meant to be open and operating in 2017. There are still strong discussions whether the airport in Lisbon (Portela) will be closed with the opening of the new one or not.
In any case both airports Portela & Alcochete are set around 100 kms from Obidos, more or less an hour drive from here.
The possibility of a new airport being built in Leiria, would make it to be set in 30 minutes drive from Obidos.
The opening of big Hotels* in the Silver Coast may have a word to say on the decision the Government will take on this issue.

Like ever, we will not sell properties based in the fact that the area will be served by another airport, we think that if this one comes great, if it doesn't then it will not be a problem at all, as 1 hour drive to this lovely area is not much after all!

No snow in the Silver Coast!

Despite the announced snowfall and temperatures down to -6 º C in the Silver Coast, we ended up with an end-to-week a little more windy than usual and with some rain.
Temperatures dropped to 1 ° C which is normal for this time of year.
Unfortunately, it seems that this is not that children will play in the snow!
It is recalled that in the last 40 years there was only snow in the Silver Coast, in November 2006 (photo attached).
In Portugal the snowfall is only reported annually in the area of "Serra da Estrela, which is about 2-3 hours drive from Caldas da Rainha, where tradition is the families of the Silver Coast go spend some breaks and have their first experience with snow.

Stamp Duty Changings!

Government is considering an end to the stamp duty tax in the Budget for this year.The Government wants to use the proposed State Budget for 2010 to advance the elimination of charging stamp duty on purchase and donation of property and its acquisition charge.Under this tax, should also disappear settlements in the leases, the allocations, a significant number of notarial acts (such as wills or heirs of education) and capital increases at companies.

Provided that was was announced by the Government takes place, seems that soon all new property buyers will feel a decrease on the tax to be paid upon the purchase moment.

The Stamp Duty tax is of 0,8% over the purchase cost meaning that a in property bought for 200.000 Eur., the property buyer will pay less 1.600 Eur. !

This change will have effect after application of new Budget for 2010, normally happening in February/March.

Starting today, the Portuguese families can count on more charges in the electricity bill, but most of the prices of goods and services will remain unchanged.
In the electricity bill this month, the families of mainland Portugal will notice an increase of 2.9 percent, representing an additional nearly a Euro (1) for a average bill of 40 Euros.
In Madeira, the increase would be 2.4 percent and the Azores will be 2.1 percent.

Hilton Hotels on October 28 announces the signing of a Franchise Licence Agreement between Hilton Worldwide and Acordo Obidos Empreendimentos Turisticos S.A. to open a full service Hilton hotel near the Medieval town of Obidos, approximately 100 kilometres north of Lisbon in Portugal.

The Hilton Bom Sucesso Obidos is scheduled to open in March 2012.

Part of a development drive in Portugal, Hilton Bom Sucesso Obidos will be the third Hilton brand property in Portugal. The contemporary architecture of the hotel will be the cornerstone of its concept strategy and will involve several architects.
The Hilton Bom Sucesso Obidos will be operated by T3 Hotels who also operate the Hilton Toledo and Hilton Sa Torre Mallorca in Spain.

“Portugal is one of Europe’s favourite holiday destinations and a key country for Hilton Worldwide,” Patrick Fitzgibbon, Hilton Worldwide Senior Vice President - Development, said. “We strongly believe in this area’s potential for growing Hilton Worldwide’s portfolio of brands, with its great weather, vibrant culture and heritage and strong tourism infrastructure. Brodie Carr revealed some news for the World Tour 2010, one confirming the completion of the Rip Curl Pro Search Peniche, instead of Mundaka.
The CEO of ASP also confirmed the reduction of 45 to 32 players (plus two wildcards per stage) from Trestles, the 5th stage of the tour, and from there the best in the WQS are better able to enter the WCT rankings.
Another novelty is the fact that the Billabong not take any step in the world in Europe, and possibly back in 2011. After the failure of the stage this year in Mundaka Billabong decided not to invest in 2010. The new format of competition should not be repeated, having been the target of some criticism. The round losers will be the format used, because, according to Brodie Carr gives more control and more surfers to show to the public.

ZARA PHILLIPS TO BUILD AT A RESORT IN SILVER COAST PORTUGAL

Zara Phillips, 2006 World Eventing Champion and BBC Sports Personality of the Year, has chosen the CampoReal Golf Resort and Spa on Lisbon’s Silver Coast as the location to build her first home abroad.

CampoReal was the site used in centuries past by Portuguese Kings to exercise their horses and is located just thirty minutes north of Portugal’s Cosmopolitan capital Lisbon. The resort was

established by Eduardo Netto de Almeida in 1998 and opened its doors in spring 2006. It now boasts 372 properties comprised of villas, townhouses and apartments, a luxurious five-star hotel, an 18-hole golf course and an equestrian centre.

Zara says of her decision to build at CampoReal Golf Resort & Spa: “Since we first met, Eduardo and his family have made me feel really welcome out here and I find I unwind quickly as everyone is very friendly but in a relaxed way. My villa will be built on the edge of vineyards that have been there for centuries, there are stunning beaches nearby and Mike [Tindall] and I can improve our handicaps on the golf course. The decision to build my holiday home here was pretty straightforward really.”

Zara is preparing to defend her title at the World Equestrian Games in 2010 and given her busy training regime, convenience played a key factor in her choice.

“With my schedule it can be tricky to squeeze in time for holidays overseas but Lisbon is really accessible to Gloucestershire flying from Bristol or Heathrow. As the travel time from door-to-door is only a few hours, I plan to use the villa as often as I can.”

Founder of the resort and an accomplished rider in his own right, Mr Netto de Almeida says: “We are extremely proud to welcome Zara to CampoReal Golf Resort & Spa. I founded the resort with the vision of attracting international clientele to enjoy our rare combination of cultural city life, countryside and beach living. Working with Zara to build her holiday villa here is the embodiment of that vision.”

With the renovation of her Cheltenham property now well underway, the villa in Portugal will be Zara’s first new build property. She is currently working with the architect onsite to create a villa that will take full advantage of its unique position in the resort.

The four-bedroom villa, situated in the new and secluded Vineyards section of the resort, will be traditionally Portuguese in style but will have some modern architectural influences. The open-plan living spaces are designed for the Silver Coast’s warm climate to make the most of the light and sunshine.

After viewing many completed properties in the development, Zara believes she has a good understanding for the designs and layouts that work in local environment.

“One of the highlights of the section I’ve chosen is the view out across the rolling vineyards and fact you can see the sunrise and sunset. I would like the focus of the villa to be around relaxing and entertaining spaces. There will also be plenty of room for guests so I will be using the entertaining spaces for just that!”

As well as consulting with the architect on the villa’s layout, Zara is also working with a renowned Portuguese interior designer, Christina Martins, on the décor which will make the most of the sunshine and natural light and combine traditional designs with some more contemporary influences.

The villa, situated on the edge of a working vineyard, also features landscaped grounds, large outdoor entertaining areas and a swimming pool.

“Although I plan to come here as a break from my training regime, my villa will have a swimming pool so I can keep fit even when I’m relaxing and I know I won’t be able to keep away from visiting the horses at the Equestrian Centre!”

The Equestrian Centre in the resort has stabling for up to 60 horses, a covered arena and a show jumping course with facilities for riding lessons and training competition horses. Plans to redevelop the centre over the next three years have been drafted and Zara has already viewed the plans and commented on them.

Construction work on Zara’s villa will begin in the second quarter of 2010.

Prices start from €250,000 for a one-bedroom apartment and €290,000 for a two-bedroom townhouse and €650,000 for a four-bedroom villa.

Group Strength
A tantalising battle between three teams, Brazil, Ivory Coast and Portugal, who love to exhibit the beautiful game. North Korea pulled off one of the biggest shocks ever in World Cup finals history when they stunned Italy back in 1966, but they will be out for an even bigger scalp if they can take down the Selecao.

Group Favourites
Brazil should be confident of securing top spot in the group, but Portugal, if they can really hit form in six months' time, will put in a serious challenge. The Selecao will be glad to face their Portuguese cousins, but a physical encounter with Ivory Coast could give them some problems.
Battle for Second
Portugal and Ivory Coast will go hammer and tongs to fight for second place at the very least. That they will meet each other in their first group game may be anti-climactic for the final round of games, but it will be an extremely vital opening encounter for both. Whoever loses will face an uphill battle to get back on track.
The Outsiders
North Korea are the underdogs in this group full of pedigree and star players. They could not have asked for a more difficult first game to kick-start their finals campaign, but if they bag positive results in the other two matches, they could pull off a surprise. Again!

The Long Road Forward
The runners-up for this group will face the winner of Group H, very likely to be Spain. That essentially means that they will have to face the number one and number two ranked nations in FIFA's current world ranking. It doesn't stop there as a potential clash with Italy also awaits in the Q-finals.
The winners of this group, however, could face Netherlands in the last 16, while England, France, Germany or Argentina are possible opponents in the semi-finals.

With a wonderful lagoon, Lagoa de Óbidos, this is the right place to practise water sports. At your disposal there is gear for rental so that you can sail all by yourself in the calm waters of the lagoon and also a group of certificated professionals that you help your initiation on any of our activities which are: windsurf, kitesurf, catamaran, optimist, canoeing, wakeboard and water ski.

In the Lagoon of Óbidos - Portugal you’ll find great conditions to practice different water sports. Escola de Vela da Lagoa takes advantage on the best that the lagoon has to offer and provides you a diverse set of activities.

You can learn comfortably with one of our monitors or in case you have experience rent the gear and sail all by yourself.
